1/8” MLV has an STC (Sound Transmission Coefficient) of 27; 1/4" MLV has an STC of 32. In real world terms, the difference is obvious to the human ear but smaller than the difference between a food blender (louder) and a garbage disposal.

Using either 1/8” or 1/4" MLV would give about the same sound reduction (Approximately 30db) as the difference between a chain saw and a garbage disposal, or between a garbage disposal and a normal conversation.
